What is Aquaponics?

    The term aquaponics, as well as the technique itself, derives from the contraction of the words aquaculture and hydroponics. Aquaponics is a farming method resulting from an ecosystem that combines fish farming and the cultivation of plants, particularly fruits and vegetables, in small areas, using minimal amounts of water and without the use of fertilizers and/or pesticides.

   In aquaponics systems, fish provide nutrients to plants through the  droppings.  Plants, in turn, filter the water which is later returned to the fish.

     Below are some of the advantages of aquaponics:

  • It's a form of circular economy;

  • Decreases carbon footprint;

  • Significantly reduces water consumption;

  • Does not use pesticides and fertilizers;

  • Solid waste can be reused in the soil;

  • Encourages the cultivation of green fodder for animals and livestock;

  • Sustainable fish farming;

  • It is a type of green technology that contributes to the well-being of people and the planet;

  • Encourages the generation of local jobs;

  • It supports education, volunteering and provides therapeutic opportunities.
